Archaeology Month
Archaeology on Display at
Florida Caverns State Park
An Exclusive Online Feature
March is Archaeology Month in Florida, a special month designated
to recognize the important archaeology of our state.

In Jackson County, the best place to learn more about local
archaeology is Florida Caverns State Park. In addition to
outstanding displays on local archaeology and history in the visitor
center, the park also offers a chance to explore several unique
archaeological sites.

The displays in the visitor center explain how the unusual rock
shelters and caves of the park were used for thousands of years by
Native Americans. Displays include an excellent diorama of an
Indian family camping at a rock shelter, details and artifacts from a
Chacato ("Chatot") village site in the park, photographs of the ruins
of Carter's Mill and more.

In addition, visitors to the Florida Caverns can see several
important archaeological sites. One of these, the location of a
village occupied by people of the Chacato tribe, was located where
the parking lot for the visitor center is today. An interpretive sign
along the walkway leading from the parking lot up to the visitor
center explains more of the history of this ancient village site.
Artifacts found here are on display inside the visitor center.

Another important archaeological site can be seen along the Bluff
or Floodplain nature trail that leads from the visitor center parking
lot (just look for the "Bluff Trail" sign). After passing through an
amazing "tunnel cave," the trail leads along the unusual bluffs that
overlook the floodplain of the Chipola River. Among the points of
interest is a fascinating rock shelter once used by Native American
hunting parties.

The interpretive staff at Florida Caverns State Park is always glad
to answer questions and can tell you more about the unique
archaeology and natural history of the park.
