Planting by the Signs
of the Moon

by Dale Cox
Planting by the phases of the moon is a
tradition that dates back thousands of years.
For as long as mankind has engaged in
farming and agriculture, the different phases
or "signs" of the moon have been used to
determine the best times to plant. Exactly how
long the practice has been in use is not
known, but indications of it have been found in
the earliest writings dealing with agriculture
and planting. It was a common part of the lives
of our ancestors here in Jackson County and
is regularly used by the more successful
farmers and gardeners in our area today.
The rules are really fairly simple. Crops that
grow above ground should be planted during
the Waxing, or the time between the New to
Full moon. Crops that grow from the roots
should be planted during the Waning, or the
time between the Full and New moon.
There is one important rule, though, nothing
should be planted on the actual day of either
the New Moon or the Full Moon.
There is nothing mystical about this old belief.
It basically derives from the theory that more
light is reflected on the earth by the moon
during certain parts of its monthly rotation
around the earth. It is thought that plants that
bear above ground grow better if they are
planted during times of increasing moonlight,
while crops that grow below ground do better
during the phase when moonlight is
decreasing.
The chart at right will give you a good schedule
for planting in April.
Good luck with your gardening!
